AeroMD Provides Base for American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Efforts

When category five Hurricane Irma struck St. Thomas last month, it was relatively kind to Nisky Center, home of the AeroMD membership office. Under the circumstances, the AeroMD team had completely shifted operations to their St. Croix base at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport. So when the need arose for space for the American Red Cross, AeroMD was pleased to relinquish that office for the non-profit to coordinate their hurricane relief efforts.

“We are extremely grateful to AeroMD for their allowing Red Cross to use their office space as our headquarters while we worked to assist the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands after Hurricane Irma,” said Ronald Baughman, leadership volunteer with the American Red Cross. “It is always great to partner with other outstanding humanitarian agencies.”

Red Cross volunteers present on St. Thomas came from all over the U.S., some as far away as Alaska. All operations for both St. Thomas and St. John were coordinated from the AeroMD Nisky Center office, which had a generator for the team’s use, imperative with power knocked out by the storm. The Red Cross worked 24/7 organizing small groups of volunteers to help at multiple St. Thomas shelters, distributing water and food. Red Cross volunteers were also picked up at Crown Bay by private boat to help on St. John.
